    Amerikaanse wijnen

    Amerikaanse wijn wordt gemaakt sinds 1769 met de stichting van de San Diego missie door de Spanjaarden. De wijnbouw verspreidde zich geleidelijk noordwaarts naarmate de missies zich vermenigvuldigden, met de eerste aanplant van druiven in de Napa Vallei in de jaren 1830. Hoewel de wijnbouw tijdens de drooglegging afnam, zijn de Verenigde Staten nu de op drie na grootste producent ter wereld en consumeren de Amerikanen meer wijn per hoofd van de bevolking dan welk ander land ook.

    Grootste Amerikaanse wijngebieden

    Meer dan 90% van de Amerikaanse wijn wordt geproduceerd in Californië, waar het warme klimaat en de grote verscheidenheid aan terroirs optimale wijnbouwomstandigheden bieden. De staat wordt gedomineerd door de wijnstreek Napa Valley, bekend om zijn krachtige rode wijnen en houtachtige witte wijnen, en het koelere Sonoma County, waar de Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley en Dry Creek Valley liggen, om er een paar te noemen. Naast Californië hebben Oregon en Washington recentelijk een reputatie verworven voor elegante rode en witte wijnen uit koelere klimaten.

    Amerikaanse druivenrassen

    De meeste populaire wijnen in de Verenigde Staten worden gemaakt van bijna alle grote Europese druivenrassen, waarbij in de meeste regio's Bordeaux-favorieten als Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot en Sauvignon Blanc domineren. Koelere streken, zoals de kustgebieden van Sonoma en Oregon, staan bekend om hun elegante Pinot Noirs en Chardonnays. Zinfandel is vooral populair in de warmere Californische wijngebieden. Amerikaanse wijnmakers blijven experimenteren met een breed scala aan andere rassen, waaronder mediterrane nietjes als Grenache, Carignan, Mourvedre en Tempranillo.
