    Wijnen uit Zuid-Afrika

    Zuid-Afrikaanse wijnen

    De eerste wijn werd in de 17e eeuw in Zuid-Afrika geproduceerd door Nederlandse en Franse kolonisten. Tegenwoordig beleeft het land een renaissance van de wijnbouw met meer dan duizend producenten en is het het achtste grootste wijnproducerende land ter wereld.

    De belangrijkste wijnproducerende regio's van Zuid-Afrika

    De Zuid-Afrikaanse wijnbouw is geconcentreerd rond de Westkaap, waar de lange hete zomers worden getemperd door de Benguelastroom uit Antarctica, die verkoelende zeebriesjes brengt. De bekendste regio's die de beste wijnen van Zuid-Afrika produceren zijn Stellenbosch, Swartland en Franschhoek, allemaal bekend om hun robuuste rode wijnen. Walker Bay en Elgin hebben een koel klimaat en zijn beter geschikt voor witte wijnen en lichtere rode wijnen. Een andere opmerkelijke regio is Constantia, de historische thuisbasis van Constance wijn, een van 's werelds beste zoete wijnen in de 18e en 19e eeuw, die ons de beste Zuid-Afrikaanse zoete wijn oplevert.

    Zuid-Afrikaanse druivenrassen

    De kenmerkende druif van Zuid-Afrika is Pinotage, een kruising tussen Pinot Noir en Cinsault, die krachtige en kruidige rode wijnen oplevert. Andere populaire druiven zijn Bordeaux-variëteiten als Cabernet Sauvignon en Merlot, maar ook Sauvignon Blanc en Chardonnay. Chenin Blanc is vooral prominent aanwezig onder de witte wijnen, waarvan er in Zuid-Afrika meer dan twee keer zoveel zijn aangeplant als in Frankrijk.

    Amerikaanse wijnen zijn het populairst.
