    Geschiedenis

    Onderdeel van de Wagner-familie van hoogwaardige wijnproducerende locaties, begon Chuck Wagner in 1988 met het planten van wijnstokken in de Santa Lucia Highlands, buiten de Napa Valley. Gelegen in Monterey County zijn de groeiomstandigheden ideaal voor de Mer Soleil Chardonnay en de Silver Chardonnay, met verkoelende zeewind en veel zon - dit bevordert vroege rijping en weelderig fruit dat deze 2 fantastische Chardonnays oplevert.

    De wijngaard wordt nu gerund door Chucks oudste zoon, Charlie F. Wagner II. Charlie heeft naast zijn vader gewerkt en is een vernieuwer op het gebied van wijn. Hij zoekt voortdurend naar nieuwe manieren om hun wijnen nog beter te maken. Zo werd Silver geboren. Mer Soleil is de klassieke Californische Chardonnay - rijk, zacht, boterachtig en gerijpt op eikenhout. De wijn wordt gefermenteerd en gerijpt in Franse eiken vaten en een deel krijgt malolactische gisting, waarna hij 12-15 maanden rijpt voordat hij wordt gebotteld. Het handmatig roeren van de vaten vangt de essentie van de wijn op en helpt een romige textuur te ontwikkelen. Zilver is het tegenovergestelde - unoaked, gefermenteerd in cement en stalen tanks, maar een wijn van even hoge kwaliteit. Dit innovatieve denken gaat voortdurend door, terwijl nieuwe wijnen worden ontwikkeld en geperfectioneerd.

    De familie Wagner heeft altijd veel nadruk gelegd op de landbouwprocessen, waarbij ze er de voorkeur aan geeft zo weinig mogelijk in te grijpen en waar mogelijk gewassen te rouleren. In Monterey verbouwen ze ook 100 hectare citroenen en het citrusaroma is vaak aanwezig in de wijnen.
